It's all about the sleeve

Every lady should have a special place in her heart for a statement sleeve.  Big sleeves, whether they are tiered, flared, ruffled, bat-winged or balloon-shaped, will transform any outfit from simple to extra special whilst remaining totally wearable.

Now that autumn is well and truly here, it’s definitely time to wear longer sleeves. At Goose Island we have an array of flattering tops, complemented by statement sleeves to make your new season wardrobe stand out from the crowd.

We’ve picked out three specific looks that we know will please our customers and help you to decide which style sleeve is for you.

Batwing sleeves can create an interesting, breezy look, and they are comfortable to wear. Surprisingly, they work for many body types. Whether you are well endowed or small chested, broad or narrow shouldered, short-waisted or long-waisted, apple shaped or pear shaped, a batwing sleeve can be flattering. For a batwing sleeve to look smart and elegant, the fabric needs to be draped softly so that the volume sits softly along the contour of the body (like this Aubergine Plain Silk Batwing top).

The colour, shape, fabric and style make this top an ideal choice for day time over a pair of jeans or as evening wear with smart black trousers, and enhanced with a long, elegant silver necklace.

Ruffles and flounces on sleeves are extremely popular this autumn, part of the Modern Retro trend. The bell sleeve, true to its name, flares out at the hem resembling the shape of a bell. Bell-shaped sleeves work just as well over solid and patterned shirts, blouses, knitted tops and dresses.Bell sleeves vary in shape. Sleeve length varies from elbow and three quarter lengths, to bracelet, full length, and beyond. The sleeve can flare from the crown of the sleeve right through to the wrist without a break to create a bohemian vibe. Or the sleeve can be broken up with a cut line to create a ruffled and flounced effect from seam to wrist. Sometimes, that style of sleeve is called a flutter sleeve.

One of our most best-sellers this season is this plain bell-sleeved dress  with cowl neck, which we’ve paired with knee-length, suede boots and leggings to create the ideal outfit for any informal but smart occasion.

One thing we’ve noticed this summer: Tassels are quite literally hanging almost everywhere we look, from bags and shoes, to clothes.Usually used as an adornment, rather than the main focus of an outfit, tassels are incredibly easy to incorporate into your wardrobe.  Similarly, frilly sleeves can add that little something extra to a cardigan or jumper. One of our top sellers for many years is the good old poncho.  Essentially a poncho is an unstructured and loose outer garment that draws its inspiration from the authentic South American poncho. It’s usually made of a knit or a woven wool, and was originally designed to keep you warm.

Ponchos have been back in fashion for a number of years and, rather than the practical version of their original format, today they tend to be knitwear and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.Whether you like neutrals or colours, three-quarter or long sleeves, high or low necklines, long or cropped lengths we have a range of ponchos to suit all tastes. In our current collection, we have the added dimension of variations in the style of the sleeves on our ponchos.  For example, we love this grey, ribbed, woollen poncho withs frilled-edge sleeves to turn something simple into an outstanding look.

Alternatively, we have added a single tassel to the sleeves of this plain, pink, cashmere poncho to add a little glamour to a simple, classy top.
